Why Traveling by Train in China Is Better Than Flying

—by Julius Yan

Having travelled extensively across China by high-speed train, I completely understand why so many people prefer it over flying.

The biggest advantage is convenience. Train stations are usually right inside the city or located close to the city centre, while airports can be far away and require long check-ins and security lines. With trains, you can often arrive just 30–40 minutes before departure and still board comfortably.

China’s high-speed rail network is honestly incredible. The trains are fast, smooth, clean, and amazingly punctual. Travelling at 300+ km/h while sitting comfortably with legroom, stable Wi-Fi/data, and beautiful countryside views feels far less stressful than airports and cramped flights.

Another thing I noticed is how efficient everything feels. There are frequent departures between major cities, so missing one train isn’t the end of the world. For trips under 5–6 hours, the train often ends up being faster door-to-door than flying.

It’s also a more relaxing way to travel. You can walk around, enjoy snacks, work on your laptop, or simply watch China pass by outside your window.

If you ever visit China, try to avoid flying. Choose the high-speed rail as much as possible and be awed by one of the best transportation systems in the world.
